Standard vs Insurance-Backed Damp Proofing Guarantees
A standard damp proofing guarantee is issued directly by the contractor responsible for installing the damp proof course.
If a problem develops with the guaranteed work, the homeowner can contact the company to request an inspection and any necessary remedial work covered by the guarantee. However, the guarantee relies on that company remaining in business and being able to fulfil its obligations.
An insurance-backed damp proofing guarantee provides an additional layer of protection through a separate insurance arrangement.
If the original contractor ceases trading, the homeowner may still be able to make a claim for qualifying defects under the insurance policy. This is an important distinction when comparing damp proofing guarantees, particularly those advertised as lasting 20, 25 or 30 years. A longer company guarantee does not automatically provide greater financial protection.
