Have Cracks Appeared in Your Brickwork?

Bricks and brick mortar can crack for many reasons, including: Natural deterioration, Foundations shifting and settling, Erosion from heavy precipitation or even Improper or amateur construction techniques.

Depending on the degree cracking, mortar cracks can be repaired using a process called Crack stitching

Does Crack Stitching Work?

Yes! Crack stitching works. It is a permanent and very effective method of structural repair for fixing cracks in brick walls.

What is Crack Stitching

Crack stitching is a permanent structural repair technique which involves using rebars (reinforcement bars) mortared into the bed joints of brick walls to repair cracks and reconnect the masonry.

These rebars overlap the crack in the wall, similar to how thread is used to stitch two pieces of cloth together.

Crack stitching is very effective and cost-efficient for repairing wall deterioration, which can be caused by a variety of factors

Why does brick mortar sometimes crack?

Brick mortar can crack for many reasons, including:

  • Natural deterioration

Mortar isn't as hard-wearing as brick and can break down over time, sometimes in as little as 20-25 years.

  • Moisture

Moisture in the joints can damage mortar, particularly when combined with freezing and thawing cycles.

  • Temperature changes

Brick materials swell and contract in response to temperature, moisture, and humidity, which can cause cracks along the brick, particularly at the corners of a building. These cracks are often cyclical, opening and closing with the seasons, and may grow wider in cold weather and narrower in hot weather.

  • Foundation shifting and settling

Horizontal cracks in brick mortar can indicate a sag in the middle of a wall, which could be caused by foundations shifting or settling.

  • Erosion from precipitation

Precipitation can cause erosion that can lead to cracks in mortar.

  • Improper construction

Using mortar that's stronger than the brick can cause cracks to form, as the mortar won't move along the mortar lines when the structure moves, and instead will move straight through the brick.

  • Excessive heat

Heat from a fire that's too big for the firebox can wear out the mortar and cause cracks.
